This recipe is a gem for busy new-mums who can easily forget to eat breakfast. Freeze in small containers and you have enough to last the week.

Ingredients (serves 12 | makes 6 small take-away container )

  • 1/2 cup Millet
  • 1 cup Quinoa
  • 3 cups Oats
  • 1/4 cup Chia Seeds
  • 10-15 Pitted Prunes
  • 1/2 cup Currants
  • 1/2 cup Goji berries
  • 4 tbsp Maca
  • 1/3 cup Rapadura Sugar
  • 3 tbsp Cinnamon
  • 8 cups Filtered water

Method

  1. Rinse quinoa and millet thoroughly with cold water.
  2. Add quinoa, millet, oats and chia seeds to a large saucepan. Add water and simmer for 10 min on medium heat.
  3. Add all other ingredients and turn to low heat. Add more water if necessary. You’re looking for a sloppy consistency.

  • I love the addition of fruits and berries to give the porridge some great taste and texture.

  • This does sound very yummy but I do wonder how good oats really are for your overall health. You could also tweak this recipe to make some really yummy muesli bars for the family. My parents both used to have oats just about every morning and my Mum is still very fit.

  • Great idea, it’s sort of like a bircher muesli but with cooked oats and grains. I think this is a marvelous idea for busy families as it can be made in advance and then just scoop into bowls in the morning. I also like that you can add fresh fruit to it.

  • Wow! This looks really interesting. We love porridge, especially in the cooler weather, which we have a lot of here. My husband got back into porridge after a stay in hospital where it was served. He has his recipe down pat now but we will both be keen to try this one.

  • Oh yum!! I love porridge and this one is so creative with what it includes. It would be the perfect start to a day and would be great to have before a hike. If you had dried ingredients, including milk powder, you may even be able to make up something to take with you on overnighters!

  • Ah the joy of porridge on a cold winter’s morning. This porridge sounds amazing, anterior there’s three ingredients in it that I don’t know! Assuming you’d need a whole foods shop to buy them? I noted the recipe is a mama of boys! I’m hoping that translates as a breakfast to satisfy their appetites!

  • I love porridge, add honey and a sprinkle of chia seeds and I’m a happy girl. I also make bircher muesli which is divine too. I’m keen to taste test this for breakfast

  • Im not the biggest fan of porridge by any means, but i do appreciate a good tasting one. Ive never heard of the ingredient millet before which sounds interesting! I do see a few superfood items in the ingredient list that makes this sound healthy and delicious to start the morning off

  • I can’t believe how easy this sounds! I was always under the opinion that these sorts of porridges required cooking of ages and I wouldn’t have time. But only 10 mins I could totally do that! I have never tried millet before but am always looking for some variety and I have read its a great low GI grain.

  • Ohmygoodness I love porridge. It brings back so many memories as a kid when my mum would make it with warm milk and a drizzle of honey. I am embarrassed to say I do not know what millet is? I had also never thought to make a bulk batch freeze individual portions for breakfasts – what a great idea!! With winter coming soon, this will be a great recipe to try.
