Clocks spring forward this Sunday, and that lost hour of sleep can be a fast track to fatigue. To help you through the transition, experts are sharing some science-backed tips we can all implement easily.

As Australians in NSW, Victoria, SA, Tasmania and the ACT prepare to move their clocks forward on Sunday 5 October, researchers from Flinders’ FHMRI: Sleep Health, including Emeritus Professor Leon Lack and Dr Gorica Micic, say the shift can disrupt sleep patterns, especially for those who naturally stay up late.

“Most people’s body clocks run slightly longer than 24 hours, which means we tend to drift later in our sleep schedules. When daylight saving begins, we’re forced to wake up earlier, which can lead to shorter sleep and increased tiredness, particularly on Sunday and Monday.”

Leon Lack, Emeritus Professor

Dr Gorica Micic adds that the effects can linger into the week, contributing to the well-known ‘Monday blues’.

“The key is to gradually shift your sleep schedule and get plenty of morning light. These small changes can make a big difference in how you feel come Monday.”

10 tips to sleep well with the time change

To help those in New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia, Tasmania, and the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) adjust smoothly, the researchers recommend these evidence-based strategies:

  1. Wake up 15–20 minutes earlier on the days leading up to the change.
  2. Avoid sleeping in on the weekend before the time change.
  3. Get morning sunlight exposure – go for a walk or have breakfast outside.
  4. Go to bed earlier in the days before the change, especially Saturday night.
  5. Dim lights in the evening to help signal bedtime to your body.
  6. Enjoy a morning coffee or tea to support your body clock shift.
  7. Avoid caffeine after midday to prevent sleep disruption.
  8. Stick to a consistent sleep schedule – don’t delay bedtime or stay out late.
  9. Ensure good sleep quality in the lead-up to the change.
  10. Avoid late-night exercise, which can delay sleep onset.

How do you cope with the start of daylight saving – do you power through, or does it throw your whole week out of whack?

  • I never like this time of year. It seems like Daylight Saving gets earlier and earlier each year. I remember it used to be around my birthday, 28th October, but now it’s at the beginning of October. I wish they’d leave the time as it is. I’m not liking the dark mornings. But like everything, you do adjust, eventually.

  • I have thankfully never had an issue with Day Light Savings at either end of the adjustments. I just wake when I wake and have the alarm when I need to. I am not a good sleeper of late but it still doesn’t worry me. I love the extra daylight in Summer and all the get togethers we can have.

  • Yep, as expected, it hit me lol! I thought I had slept when I woke up at 8am and the realised it was normal time of 7am.
I will have to prepare myself better next time because I definitely have been playing catch up and wish I’d been ready for it

  • I always dread this time of year when we lose that extra hour! My kids seem to tolerate it a lot more better than me. It always creeps up and i know i should sleep earlier but time always gets the best of me and im exhausted the next day! Thanks for the tips!

  • Thanks so much for posting this I didn’t even realise it was daylight savings this weekend! I will definitely be going to be a little earlier tomorrow night because I’m already having a late night tonight having to pick my daughter up from a birthday party so I think I might be grumpy mum tomorrow lol

  • We don’t have daylight saving here in WA so it doesn’t affect us although I did really enjoy this article and the great tips it offered to help those who have trouble adjusting. It was interesting reading that fatigue can last up to a week post the daylight saving change over. This was quite enlightening.

  • Oh my favourite time of the year I just love Daylight saving I seem to thrive on it I dont know if its because of it getting dark later or what.
It seems to get me more motivated and I really dont care or miss that less 1hour sleep as I said Love it
