A salad that’s eaten using chips instead of a fork? No wonder this gloriously green creation has gone viral!

Packed full of green goodness, this Green Goddess Salad went ballistic on TikTok, with the original recipe posted by Baked by Melissa clocking up more than 18 million views. It’s super easy to make, healthy and filling and a great twist on a traditional salad.

It’s essentially a vegan pesto type of dressing that can really be made with whatever green veggies you have in the fridge. Just tweak and tune the recipe to your liking – swap out the nuts for different types, switch out the herbs or use a different oil. Although this salad makes a brilliant side dish, if you pair it with some pita chips, it’s just asking to be gobbled down as a meal on its own!

Have a look at how quick it is to make:

Ingredients

  • 1 small head green cabbage
  • 3-4 baby cucumbers or one large
  • 1/4 cup chives
  • 1 bundle green onion/scallions
  • 1 cup basil leaves
  • 1 cup spinach leaves
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • 1 small shallot
  • Juice of 2 lemons
  • 1/4 cup olive oil
  • 1/4 cup nuts of your choice (I used cashews and walnuts)
  • 1/3 cup nutritional yeast
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 tbl rice vinegar
  • Extra chives (optional)

Method

  1. Wash and then chop all salad ingredients (green cabbage, baby cucumbers, chives, green onions) as small as you’d like and place in a big bowl.
  2. Add all liquid salad dressing ingredients (lemon juice, olive oil, rice vinegar) to a blender, then add the rest of the dressing ingredients (basil leaves, spinach leaves, garlic, shallot, nuts, yeast, salt chives) to the same blender and blend until smooth.
  3. Pour dressing over salad mix and enjoy with a chip or two!

  • I am going to try this salad as is and I’d also like to try adding some natural yoghurt and spooning it over potatoes. My husband loves anything with potatoes in it. 😀

  • We gave this a shot last night and served it up on a bed of plain nacho chips – it was delicious! Previously I have purchased a salad with the exact same name from the supermarket but this one was a lot tangier and so much better made fresh. There was heaps left over for todays lunch boxes as well. It was quick to make and delicious to eat.

  • Oooh yum, I love all the green veggies in this salad. It reminds me of pesto but with the added goodness of spinach and cabbage. I have not ever had nutritional yeast and am curious as to its health benefits. I also love that you can eat this salad like a dip. Thanks Anita.

  • I really don’t think I could imagine a worse looking salad! I hope it tastes better than it looks because it really doesn’t appeal to me at all. The only thing interesting about it is the name. There are so many other veggies that are equally healthy that could add more colour and substance.

  • This is so very unusual and so many flavors that I am going to have to try it. Thanks for sharing as I am not a TicTok user at all. Salads are so easy and so great for lunch boxes and picnics in ready to eat containers. I’m very curious.

  • Made something similar to this on the weekend, after taking inspiration from this website and this recipe. I added chunks of avocado because i love that creamy taste and texture that ties everything together. I felt guilt free eating this as a snack and it was soo delicious too! Awesome recipe to tweak to make your own

  • It looks absolutely delicious. I have bought a prepackaged salad with the exact same name from a major supermarket chain and loved it but making my own would be so much better! A lot of the ingredients are relatively easy to grow which would make it super tasty and affordable. Yum!

  • This looks oh so damn good! It’s not only super healthy, it’s super tasty and so easy to make….any idiot can do it! Yum by itself with biscuits to dip or can be used as a tasty side for lots of dishes

  • Apart from scraping it out of the blender, the green goddess dressing is worth the hype! Yummy and healthy, the depth of flavour is so delicious. Also, been years since I made pita chips! Had forgotten all about them, but easy and delicious and a nice pairing with this salad. Must get them back into rotation.

  • This sounds super delish! I have seen a few similar recipes where they use fine chopped broccoli stems, which is interesting but also sounds like it would be tasty and bump up the fibre massively! I Could see this being a great alternate to dips too and would pair nicely with a corn chip or lavish bread

  • This sounds really yummy. Ive heard of ‘green goddess’ dressing and variants before but seeing this as a salad is definitely interesting and sounds right up my alley! I like the ingredients listed and how easy it is to prepare. Thanks for sharing this recipe! It looks yummy and healthy .
